 FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to this new website for the Dylan Thomas Society of Great Britain. Although based and rooted in Dylan’s home town of SWANSEA in South Wales we are open to, and welcome members from around the globe and already keep in contact with Dylan Thomas  societies in Australia, Canada and the U.S.A.

It is our aim to use the web, this site and new social opportunities to encourage new members from around the world to join and become involved with the society and enjoy with us the continuing study and enjoyment of the life and work of  DYLAN THOMAS.

We now have a dedicated e-mail address where members [and non members wishing to join] can access officers of the Society: info@thedylanthomassocietyofgb.co.uk

This is particularly timely as we approach the forthcoming Centenary year in 2014 and already a plethora of events are being mooted and planned and a website for this has just gone live at: www.dt100.info

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT HANNAH ELLIS THOMASI am delighted to have taken on the role of president of the Dylan Thomas Society of Great Britain. I am very proud that the society has members that are passionate about my Grandfather’s writing, and who have worked tirelessly for many years to ensure the wealth of work he created, in just thirty nine years, is celebrated.

There are a number of significant dates which will allow us to ensure my Grandfather, and his work, is remembered. In 2013, it will be the 60th anniversary of my Grandfather’s death and of the first performance of Under Milk Wood, as well as my Grandfather’s death. Meanwhile, 2014 will be the centenary of his birth. There are big plans underway to have a year-long Dylan Thomas 100 festival around Wales and beyond.
My vision for Dylan Thomas 100 is that it will help promote and revitalize the interest in my Grandfather’s work, allowing new audiences to understand his complex and interesting life and enjoy his many different types of writing. In particular, I would like them to learn about his fun and eccentric characters, and the places that helped him create them. As a primary school teacher, I am very keen to see my Grandfather’s work introduced to younger audiences in a creative and fun way, and for some literacy and communication projects to be developed to support children who either struggle or excel in those areas. I hope that the centenary will leave a lasting legacy for Dylan Thomas, his work and the places that inspired him.

(THIS WAS A GREAT EPIC AFTERNOON – MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO CAME – IF YOU MISSED IT PLEASE JOIN US NEXT YEAR)

THE BIRTHDAY LUNCHEON

Last Sundays’s Birthday Luncheon was a very enjoyable if somewhat epic afternoon. Some 80 odd guests enjoyed very fine food and good company at Swansea’s elegant Sketty hall where Suzette and her young staff really looked after us and the chef and his team did a fine job. We were thrilled that our President Hannah Ellis could join us with her family for the afternoon and she once again addressed us on developments which are ongoing towards the 2014 Centenary Celebrations.

Guy Masterson flew in from Belfast and entertained us with a dazzling verbal autobiography, interesting throughout but very much so when he explained how through his friendship with his Uncle, Richard Burton, he discovered the beauty and power of the works of Dylan Thomas

It is hoped that even more of you will attend next years Luncheon and we hope to announce our next speaker shortly.
